Lukas Nelson: 'Dad and I Don't Smoke Weed Anymore'

Lukas Nelson (posterized)

The son of the most famous pothead in the world no longer consumes cannabis.

"He and I both now don't smoke weed anymore," Lukas Nelson says about himself and his famous father, Willie Nelson, on Rolling Stone's Nashville Now podcast hosted by Joseph Hudak. "And that's great!"

It makes sense especially for the elder Nelson, who suffers from emphysema and recently noted, "I don’t really do anything now much except a few edibles."

Willie and Annie Nelson's 36-year-old guitar-playing son says chosing sobriety was about him "wanting to be clear."

Nelson stopped drinking in 2018. "I wasn't really a heavy drinker," he explains. "I never really liked it anyway."

During the pandemic, with rare downtime off the road, Nelson decided to not "smoke weed all day" and just concentrate on "feeling good about myself." He started exercising and meditating instead.

"Stopping weed was a lot harder for me," he says. "Weed really helped me to distract myself from things that I was feeling inside I probably had to face. Making me face parts of myself I don't like was a difficult choice, but I did it. I'm glad I did it because now I feel really great. I have respect for everyone on their journey."

How did his father react to the news?

"My dad respects individuality. He respects being yourself. I don't think it mattered to him either way."

Nelson offers one caveat: "Once or twice a year I'll do mushrooms and check in with myself. But I don't do anything habitually anymore."

GOIN' SOLO

Another major change in Nelson's life was disbandng The Promise of the Real, his longtime touring band. His first solo album, American Romance, was released in June.
