Better known for his career in movies, but never awarded, Seth Rogen has finally caught the eye of Hollywood and it's The Studio, his in-your-face comedy series about a fledgling film company with him as the boss that received 23 Emmy nominations. Rogen took home the Lead Actor in a Comedy Series trophy to open the Emmy Awards on Sept. 14. The show won 13 overall.
"I've never won anything," he said from the stage with his customary guffaw. "When I was a kid I bought a huge bowling trophy in an estate sale. My parents were like, Yeah, that's a good idea. You should probably buy that."
He went on win three more – for directing and writing with his partner Evan Goldberg – and Outstanding Comedy Series.
Hannah Einbinder also earned her first Emmy on her fourth try for supporting actress in a comedy for Hacks. Joking in her droll way, she noted, "I was really committed to the personal narrative I had that it was cooler to continue to lose, but this is cool too. This is also punk rock." Einbinder lost three Emmys previously for Hacks amd also three Golden Globes. She ended her speech with a call to "free Palestine."
It's a colossal haul for a first-time show and major recognition for Rogen who's built his career around weed.
Julianne Nicholson also won for Hacks as guest actress ("Dance Mom") and the show's lead Jean Smart repeated again in the comedy category. She's won the last four years. But Hacks was dethoned as Outstanding Comedy Series by Rogen's upstart The Studio.
The cast of Shrinking didn't fare well with Harrison Ford, Jason Segal, Jessica Williams and Michael Urie getting shut out. So were Walton Goggins and Parker Posey (The White Lotus), Brian Tyree Henry (Dope Thief) and The Studio's Ike Barinholtz, Kathryn Hahn and Catherine O'Hara.
However, Bryan Cranston did win the guest actor comedy award, a category that included Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, Zoë Kravitz, Anthony Mackie and Dave Franco. All appeared in The Studio.
The Studio also won in the following categoies: Casting, Cinematography, Contemporary Costumes, Music Supervision, Picture Editing, Production Design, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing.
