Golf is hot with Stick at Apple TV+ and Happy Gilmore 2 in theaters.
Forty-five years ago, it was the backdrop for Harold Ramis' farce Caddyshack that starred SNL stalwarts Chevy Chase and Bill Murray. Two years earlier, Ramis co-wrote National Lampoon's Animal House. Caddyshack is No. 22 on our list of greatest stoner movies.
A light-hearted comedy about saving a local golf course from real-estate speculators, Caddyshack famously features Murray as befuddled course greenskeeper Carl Spackler, who likes to get stoned on his own strain of marijuana. "This is a cross of Kentucky Bluegrass, Featherbed Bent and Northern California Sinsemilla," Carl tells Ty (Chevy Chase) before he sparks up a "big Bob Marley joint." "The amazing stuff about this is that you can play 36 holes on it in the afternoon, take it home and just get stoned to the bejesus-belt that night on this stuff. I've got pounds of this stuff." Carl likes to top it off with a swig of cheap white wine, what he calls a "Cannonball."
Spackler preceded Spicoli, Sean Penn's classic stoner from Fast Times at Ridgemont High, by two years.
Caddyshack, hyped as "The Snobs Against The Slobs," grossed $40 million at the box office and spurred a sequel eight years later.
